Sree Uthradom Tirunal Marthanda Varma Chithralayam

Constructed in 1839AD by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, Rengavilasam Palace is marked by imposing facades and several intricately carved gables. The pillars in wood, beautified with carvings; aesthetically and strategically kept beams, ornate ceilings, and clusters of gables make Rengavilasom Palace an architect's wonder and discerning tourist's delight. Conceived by H. H.Sree Uthradaom Thirunal Marthanda Varma (last Elaya Raja of Travancore) collections in Chitralayam includes valuable articles possessed by the Royalty, rare photographs taken by the Elaya Raja himself a connoisseur of photography, and other ace photographers like William D'cruz, N. P. Hariharan, S.Rajan and B. Jayachandran.

 

These are set in traditional royal ambiance. It is hoped that this museum would not only generate a renewed interest in the history of Travancore but also provide a rare insight into the uniqueness of the Royalty of Travancore State. Each picture now on display here has been selected to inform and educate the visitors on the glory that was Travancore. Facts, context, character, timeline, and location have been accorded top priority. From more than 6000 documented images, a careful selection of 200 images has been made on the criteria of appeal, authenticity, and artistic merit. Blown up for effect, printed in quality archival ink, these pictures truly testify to the rich heritage of Travancore. The overall quality is enhanced using oil colors. Superior quality frames support the pictures. The museum is open on all days and the timing is 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with an interval at noon.
